Yet another libertarian summer in sight...

As a follower of Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard, and a fan of the Austrian School in economics, I am frightened by the dramatic evolution of the last few months in societies all around the globe. After the burst of the housing bubble in the United States in the Fall of 2007, the entire world has experienced a gigantic crisis on the financial markets throughout the year 2008. This credit crunch triggered the bankruptcy of many banks and financial institutions and brought the global capitalist system on the edge of the abyss.
Both politicians and the ordinary people blame the free market for what happened, and even the media and many notable academics support this fallacy. The truth is completely different. So are the solutions. Nor the housing bubble or the collapse of the financial system, were caused by failing markets, but by failing governments. And only Austrians had seen this coming. All their predictions turned out to be correct. Unfortunately, the political castes refused to acknowledge this and adopted the same kind of big government solutions that were the recipes for disaster to begin with.
This financial crisis was triggered by the massive credit expansions of central banks in the U.S. and Europe who fuelled the real estate boom and caused an overdrive in consumption and investment -- an unsustainable combination according to Austrian business cycle theory. Next to the terrible monetary policy of Alan Greenspan’s heavily politicized Federal Reserve board, also bad left-wing policy decisions (e.g. cheap mortgages and houses for the poor through schemes like the Community Reinvestment Act or state quangos like Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac) are to be blamed.
The bail-outs have the intention to make the downturn of the financial market less apparent, but unfortunately, and this even regardless of the numerous moral hazards present, they are also hurting the liquidation of bad businesses and bad investments, which is an inherent process to business cycles in a sustainable market economy living through a downturn. This crisis is hence not announcing the death of capitalism per se, but rather the death of monetarism and supply-side economics, as already predicted by Austrians decades ago. Only a sound money system and a true free market can save the global economy.
Why am I a libertarian?
And how did I become one?
Friedrich Hayek, in spite of him being an economist, had a tremendous impact on my political views. I have always been an individualist and a moderate/conservative liberal, but it wasn't until my university years in Namur (2003-2005) when I finally realized that I was a classical liberal or libertarian. Or maybe I have always been a libertarian by heart, but it wasn’t until my first year in college that I could put a coherent name on my socio-political beliefs and convictions. A constitutional history professor at Namur University called Bruno Colson taught me the fundamentals of classical liberalism and forced me to read Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom for my exam.
I was deeply fascinated by the book because it translated the vast majority of my previous gut feelings into words. The same year, I went on reading other books like Hayek’s The Constitution of Liberty and Bastiat’s Selected Essays on Political Economy. And these books truly pushed me over the edge. I have been calling myself a libertarian ever since. Especially after I took the World’s Smallest Political Quiz in the same period of time and turned out to be a libertarian. Later on, I discovered that classical liberals call themselves libertarians today in order to make a clear distinction with socialists who are often called liberals as well. As from that moment, I have never ceased referring to myself as a libertarian.

Tiens, dat IHS is helemaal anders dan in mijn tijd. Toen trokken wij elke zomer voor drie tot vijf weken naar San Francisco en kregen wij wekenlang lessen in het libertarisme. Nu zijn dat precies gewoon weekjes met populaire thema's geworden in plaats van pure ideologische indoctrinatie. En PERC, nooit van gehoord, is dat iets nieuw?
I find it hard to see how any libertarian can support the actions of the Israeli government against Palestinians, yet you do, and are actively supporting the IDF in their actions.

The real homeland for the white, Ashkenazi Jews is near the Caspian and Black Seas, not Palestine. Their ancestors picked up the Jewish religion many centuries ago. But they are not the descendants of the Jews that lived in Palestine. So, do “Ashkenazi” Jews have a right to Palestine? Imagine if Africans made the mistake of assuming Alaska was their homeland.
Furthermore, because the Zionists are not real Jews, criticizing their attempt to create Israel is not criticizing Jews! In fact, the Ashkenazi Jews outnumber the real Jews, and are discriminating against the real Jews in Israel. For example, have you heard about their ringworm treatment for Sephardi children?
Pro-Israel apologists claim the issue of whether the Zionist Jews are related to the original Jews is irrelevant, and cannot affect Israel’s right to exist. The truth is that Israel does not have a right to exist. No state does, as states don’t have rights. Israel CAN justify its existence but only by standing on its own two feet and providing security to its citizens independent of U.S. aid (or any other aid for that matter).
Why not allow the Aztecs have a special homeland in Palestine? When the Romans caused Celts to migrate into the British Isles, they took land away from whoever was living there already. Why not let those people have a homeland in Palestine?
All throughout history we find groups of people fighting with their neighbors, and migrating to different areas. If the Jews had fought with the Arabs for Palestine a thousand years ago, the Arabs may have moved eastward after a few fights, and the Jews may have created Israel without much suffering.
However, nobody today is nomadic. You cannot chase a person off his land by throwing rocks at him or by shooting at him with arrows. Furthermore, the human population is dense; there is no vacant land anywhere.
Today all groups of people refuse to move. The end result is that fights over territory become devastating for any nation foolish enough to get involved in such fights.
It is no longer practical for people to fight over territory. We are no longer living like animals, and we must stop fighting over territory like animals.
The Jews are trying to create Israel in an era when creating nations is impractical. The entire world is suffering tremendously, and we should give it up as a hopeless fantasy.
Israeli racism manifests itself in a bunch of laws that are necessary to safeguard Jewish privilege, including the Law of Return (1950), the Law of Absentee Property (1950), the Law of the State’s Property (1951), the Law of Citizenship (1952), the Status Law (1952), the Israel Lands Administration Law (1960), the Construction and Building Law (1965), and the 2002 temporary law banning marriage between Israelis and Palestinians of the occupied territories. The maintenance of all the racist laws guarantees the Jewish character of the state.
Zionism and Israel are very careful not to generalise the principles that justify Israel’s need to be racist but are rather vehement in upholding it as an exceptional principle.
For decades, pro-Israel Zionists and pro-Israel neoconservatives have not only manipulated the puppet strings of Congres and the White House in favor of open borders and multiculturalisism, but have also supported and still support immigration of Muslims into the West.
In the age of Zionism, we are told, anti-Semitism has metamorphosed into something that is more insidious. Today, Israel and its Western defenders insist, genocidal anti-Semitism consists mainly of any attempt to take away and to refuse to uphold the absolute right of Israel to be a racist Jewish state.

De PFS is enkel toegankelijk voor leden van dat genootschap en staat dus niet open voor applicaties van iedereen. Daarom staat de PFS niet in mijn overzicht vermeld, net zomin als de MPS-bijeenkomst in augustus in Stockholm. En ook minder educatieve bijeenkomsten zoals de ERB in augustus in Aix-en-Provence of de LC/FC in oktober in Londen heb ik hier niet vermeld.

Het IHS heeft enkele jaren geleden inderdaad een transformatie ondergaan. Het maakt nu deel uit van de "George Mason University" in Fairfax (Virginia) en organiseert weekseminaries in verschillende Amerikaanse universiteiten. Ik denk wel dat ze even ultra-liberaal gebleven zijn, alleen dat ze hun boodschap iets gematigder willen verkopen dan vroeger. Of PERC nieuw is, weet ik niet. Ik heb PERC zelf wel pas vorige zomer leren kennen, dus misschien...

Even for the record. Er zijn nog tientallen andere libertarische evenementen in de wereld voor handen ook. Ik tracht hier zeker géén volledige opsomming te geven. Wel anders nog even de volgende aanhalen: de World Economic Summit op de Bahama's deze maand, het Freedom Fest in Las Vegas en de Cato University in Rancho Bernardino in augustus, de massa's seminaries van de Friedrich Naumann Stiftung in Europa en in de derde wereld, de Prague Conference on Political Economy van het Liberalni Institut in april en de ATLAS-evenementen in april (Los Angeles) en juli (Niagara Falls en Arlington-Virginia).
En wat betreft de PFS nog het volgende. Ik zou dit jaar zelf graag de PFS bijwonen. Moest u goede contacten hebben met de organisatoren, mag u voor mij altijd een goed woordje doen ;-) Ik heb er professor Hoppe enkele maanden terug in Londen al eens over aangesproken en ben uiteindelijk van plan om voor die bijeenkomst in Turkije eind januari te appliceren.
Paul Beliën is meer een paleoconservatief dan een libertariër. Idem voor Taki trouwens. Hoppe is een anarcho-kapitalist en die andere ken ik eigenlijk niet. Hoppe is niet echt consequent in zijn gedachten, en dit ongeacht de enorme adoratie die ik al jaren voor hem koester. Enerzijds vindt hij dat eigendom absoluut is en we moeten evolueren naar private staatjes (een soort van grote "gated communities" eigenlijk) maar anderzijds verzet hij zich tegen Israël dat grof op de korrel genomen daar een ersatz-voorbeeld van is. Verder vindt één van Hoppes leermeesters, Robert Nozich, dat het bewerken van land (vermengen van arbeid en eigendom) op zich al voldoende argumenten in zich draagt om rechtmatig eigendom te verwerven. Opnieuw is Israël daar het ersatz-voorbeeld van. Als we de operaties van de IDF beschouwen als defensief van aard én als reactie op een eerdere aanval/bedreiging (wat ik dus doe) is dat ook volgens de theorieën van Hoppe en Nozick perfect aanvaardbaar. Het verschil zit hem niet in de theorie maar in het toepassingsveld van die theorie. En in de praktijk is het natuurlijk niet zo zwart-wit. Israël heeft ook grond verworven zonder ervoor te betalen of zonder die te bewerken. Israël heeft ook in bepaalde gebieden land onteigend. Maar los van die excessen (waar ik tegen gekant ben) is Israël voor mij als libertariër grosso modo in orde.

De blokkade van Gaza was een daad van geweld, en mits het gerechtvaardigd is dat een staat terugslaat, als antwoord op de ondergane aanval, dan zult u moet toegeven dat de tegenaanval van Hamas gerechtvaardigd was door de initiële agressie vanwege de Israëlische staat tegen de Palestijnse boeren.

Israel never observed the cease-fire to begin with. From the beginning, it announced a “special security zone” within the Gaza Strip and announced that Palestinians who enter this zone will be fired upon. In other words, Israel announced its intention that Israeli soldiers would shoot at farmers and other individuals attempting to reach their own land in direct violation of not only the cease-fire but international law.
Despite shooting incidents, including ones resulting in Palestinians getting injured, Hamas still held to the cease-fire from the time it went into effect on June 19 until Israel effectively ended the truce on November 4 by launching an airstrike into Gaza that killed five and injured several others.

Hamas voert hier orders uit van Iran via de bevelen van hun leider die in Syrië een gezellig leventje leidt.
Je gaat hier volledig voorbij aan de perversiteit van die situatie en doet alsof de Palestijnen hun eigen oorlog uitvechten. Ze voeren een proxy oorlog voor Iran en worden er voor betaald, allez hun leiders.
Stop toch met die eigendom' onzin, geen enkele Palestijn was eigenaar van zijn land, de dorpsoverste of "sheikh" nam waar hij goesting in had en de dorpelingen mochten hun geiten hoeden op dat land. Dat was de ganse economie van dat Godvergeten stuk woestijn.
Houdt toch op westerse begrippen en toestanden te extrapoleren op die landen.
Het is pas sinds Israël er iets doet dat het "land" een waarde kreeg en echte eigenaars heeft.
Verder kan het me geen botten schelen of de joden uit Canada, Rusland of China komen, ze hebben een charter van de VN. Punt.

U moet het niet zo ver zoeken.
Het conflict met Hamas moet de aandacht afleiden van interne Israëlische problemen. De dichotomie tussen Palestijnen en Israëli’s verhult sociaal-economische, culturele en religieuze tegenstellingen binnen het werkelijke Israël. Sefardische joden worden vaak door hun Ashkenazi-broeders gediscrimineerd. Orthodoxe joden staan lijnrecht tegenover seculiere burgers. De kosten van de bezetting en de permanente strijd worden in de vorm van sociale besparingen op de gewone bevolking afgewenteld. Studenten en vakbonden kwamen het voorbije jaar regelmatig op straat om te protesteren tegen de bezuinigingen. Via anti-Palestijnse en anti-Arabische retoriek en politiek worden inwendige contradicties en sociaal ongenoegen in uitwendig racisme en kolonialisme gesublimeerd.
Eretz Yisrael, van de Nijl tot de Eufraat. Het Bijbelse Zion als geopenbaard in de twee blauwe lijnen van de Israëlische vlak. Dat is het doel van de Joden. Vandaag, vroeger, én morgen! Dit heeft niets te maken met terreur of met defensie, maar met het verwerven van meer land om de Zionistische Leviathan te voeden. Vervang de Eufraat door de Oeral en de Nijl door de Noordzee, en het voortbestaan van Israël door het duizendjarige rijk en je weet ineens van waar opnieuw de wind waait.
Toen ik een jaar aan Georgetown studeerde heb ik kennis kunnen maken met libertarische organisaties zoals 'Students for Liberty', het 'IHS', FEE of het LVMI. Zeker omdat ze allemaal geregeld conferenties in Washington hielden en ik daar toen kokoteerde. Groot was mijn verbazing dan ook toen ik het jaar nadien in Europa een IES-seminarie (in Bulgarije ergens) meepikte. Dat was zo basic en al bij al maar een zwak afkooksel van haar Amerikaanse evenknie. Nu woon en werk ik in Zwitserland, en ben ik blij met de libertarische fratsen van weleer, maar de strijd zelf heb ik wel al lang geleden gestaakt.

Ik heb het commentaar in kwestie zoals door u geciteerd eens proberen te posten als commentaar op TBJ. Ik kreeg een preview plus het commentaarformulier waarbij de commentaar in het rood omrand was. Dit wijst erop dat uw commentaar te lang is. Met andere woorden, uw commentaar is nooit verschenen op TBJ (behalve in een preview-scherm met een foutmelding) en kon dus ook niet "gecensureerd" worden.
IES is laag van niveau, net zoals het ILS in Canada en dat Liberty-ding in Leuven heb ik van horen zeggen.
Over saai en taai gesproken... Naar dit gezeur kom ik niet meer kijken.
