1. GROEN heeft deze week kennelijk een nieuwe partijdoctrine in het leven geroepen. Naast het eco-fascisme op milieuvlak zal GROEN in socio-economische zaken voortaan het communisme belijden en in internationale zaken het moslimextremisme, terrorisme incluis.
Zo vraagt de federale kamerfractie GROEN-ECOLO al dagen om vertegenwoordigers van Hezbollah in het parlement te mogen ontvangen zonder dat de islamistische gasten gearresteerd of lastig gevallen zouden worden door de Belgische ordediensten. Of hoe de vaderlandse rechtsorde in hun ogen kennelijk minder van belang is dan de manifestatiedrang tegenover het islamistische potentieel GROEN-kiezers. Vandaag dient GROEN daarenboven bij monde van haar (toevallig?) islamistisch gemeenteraadslid Meyrem Almaci in de Antwerpse gemeenteraad een pro-Palestijnse resolutie in die Israël op de vingers tikt en oproept de Gaza-operaties te staken. GROEN verzette zich als enige partij enkele maanden geleden ook tegen de invoering van het hoofddoekenverbod in Antwerpen, maar daarin een consistente opvrijpolitiek van islamistische allochtonen te zien, is waarschijnlijk 'ongepast'... Politiek incorrect: een geuzennaam.
En echt alles wordt bij de ecologisten van stal gehaald om de islamistenstem binnen te halen. Omdat islamisten doorgaans op de kap van anderen willen leven, omarmt GROEN nu ook het communisme. Zij pleiten voortaan voor vier vijfde arbeid als een 'recht' voor iedereen en willen elke burger in de toekomst een vast 'staatsloon' verschaffen. Dit stukje onverbloemd marxisme moet bovendien gefinancierd worden door vermogens (nog) meer te gaan belasten. Nochtans betalen vermogenden nu al roerende voorheffingen en beurstaksen allerhande. Op geld waarop vroeger trouwens al eens belastingen betaald werden nota bene! Dubbele belastingen, driedubbele belastingen, het kan niet op bij de islamocommunisten van GROEN. Welkom in de heelgroene en totalitaire toekomst. Welkom in Ecologië! Of zeg ik beter Eurabië?
2. De voorbije dagen werd prompt het smogalarm afgekondigd en moesten de overbelaste en volledig door de overheid verguisde automobilisten zich plots aan 90km/u maximumsnelheid houden op de snelwegen. België staat in deze maatregel alleen. En dat is logisch. Wetenschappers betwijfelen de impact van deze pestmaatregel.
Professoren van de Universiteit Antwerpen en de K.U. Leuven, o.a. Wilfried Debacker in een weekendinterview op ATV, hebben hun twijfels bij de impact van 'fijn stof' op de gezondheidstoestand van de burgers. Eerst en vooral is de link tussen de stofdeeltjes en bepaalde longaandoeningen onvoldoende bewezen. Daarnaast is 'fijn stof' eigen aan alle verbrandingen in de natuur en bestaat er onzekerheid over het aandeel van snelwegverkeer in de totale hoeveelheid fijn stof. Vervolgens is de globale impact van een klein land als België sowieso al verwaarloosbaar. En tenslotte zou het verminderen van de uitstoot op snelwegen geen impact hebben op de hoeveelheid fijn stof in de woonkernen. Verder onderzoek moet hier klaarheid in scheppen. Maar dit houdt de overheid natuurlijk niet tegen om de burgers nu al het leven zuur te maken, nu al het leven onmogelijk te maken.
Mede-VLD'er Michael Apers vatte het schitterend samen in een recente e-mail aan mij. "Wetenschappers zijn het er roerend over eens dat de snelheidsbeperking geen enkele zin heeft en zelfs in geen enkele vorm het effect van het fijn stof mildert. Maar toch blijft de staat deze maatregel handhaven. Waarom? Om ons als geconditioneerde hondjes te laten opzitten telkens een of andere onnozele ambtenaar daar zin in heeft? Men dringt de bevolking al te snel allerlei verplichtingen en verboden op zonder nadenken, maar wat erger is: als blijkt dat die zelfs geen effect hebben, is er blijkbaar geen enkele apparatsjik in Brussel die de moed of het gezond verstand kan opbrengen om de maatregel terug te schroeven." Apers heeft gelijk. Het is wraakroepend dat vrije burgers afhankelijk zijn van de grillen van door hen (over)betaalde ambetantenaren.
3. Even als tussendoortje gewag maken van enkele interessante bijdragen die mij de laatste dagen voor ogen zijn gekomen. Rolph Zaman analyseert het toenemende populisme in de politiek en stelt de terechte vraag naar het primaat van marketing of ideologie in het politieke bedrijf. Jürgen Vandewalle stelt in een ander opiniestuk dan weer dat de grote verhalen terug zijn en dat dit misschien ten koste van het herwonnen individualisme kan gaan. De Amerikaanse internetkrant "The American Thinker" publiceerde een kroniek van vijftig jaar communisme in Cuba en de website Express pakte uit met een gouden beleggingstip. Het goud wordt de volgende bubbel.
Europees voorzitter Vaclav Klaus wond er in de "Financial Times" geen doekjes om. Markten moeten bevrijd worden, niet gereguleerd! Gawain Towler haalde in de sneeuw dan weer een lol uit die door de Eurocraten niet geapprecieerd werd. Kinderachtige Eurofielen! Ondertussen bericht Daniel Hannan in "The First Post" dat een onderzoeksjournalist gearresteerd werd (en nadien met een schadevergoeding vrijgelaten) omdat hij een dossier aan het opstellen was over fraude met Europees geld. De "EU Observer" meldt dan weer dat de EU een verhuis naar het Heizelcomplex overweegt omdat een Europees Commissaris vriendjes heeft onder de Brusselse bouwpromotoren en die laatste graag nieuwe monsterprojecten bij hen besteld zien worden. Ook al zijn die op zich niet nodig. En tenslotte even een kanttekening maken bij B. Hussein Obama en diens inauguratie op 20 januari. De festiviteiten worden grotendeels privaat gefinancierd. Alleen komen de privé-giften dit jaar hoofdzakelijk van Wall Street-bankiers! Of hoe bailouts met belastinggeld gewoon dienen om nog meer macht en invloed in de politiek af te kopen. B. Hussein Obama, le nouveau PS est arrivé...
4. De IDF is Gaza binnengetrokken als reactie op maandenlange raketaanvallen vanuit de Gazastrook op steden in Zuid-Israël. Het gaat om een defensieve actie en Israël heeft al te kennen gegeven niet permanent in de Gazastrook te willen blijven. En niets wijst ook op het tegendeel. De internationale gemeenschap liet aanvankelijk dan ook betijen. Maar nu er onschuldige burgerslachtoffers beginnen te vallen, keert de laffe internationale gemeenschap snel haar kar.
Ik betreur de onschuldige burgerslachtoffers natuurlijk in dit conflict, maar ik wijs daarvoor niet met de vinger naar Israël. Ik ben een rabiaat Zionist en geloof sterk in de morele en juridische gronden volgens dewelke Israël op haar grondgebied aanspraak kan maken. In de eerste plaats werden de dorre gronden gekocht, niet militair verworven. In de tweede plaats hebben de settlers zelf aan irrigatie en innovatie gedaan en hebben zij zelf van woestijnen akkers gemaakt. In de derde plaats hebben de settlers steeds respect gehad voor de inheemse volkeren voor zolang zij bereid waren de landeigenaars te volgen. Tot op vandaag zijn de Arabische Israëlieten één van de best beschermde minderheden in de wereld. Het mag ons dan ook niet verbazen dat in een recente studie van Harvard blijkt dat meer dan 75% van de Arabische Israëlieten onvoorwaardelijk achter de daden en beslissingen van Israël staat. We mogen ook niet vergeten dat de Gazastrook een 'failed state' is en in geen enkel opzicht verschilt van Transnistrië of Somalië. In tegenstelling tot de Israëlische regering in Jeruzalem is Hamas internationaal maar in één enkel opzicht erkend, namelijk als terreurgroep.
De oprechtheid van Israël staat buiten kijf. Enkele jaren geleden hebben zij het eigen leger ingezet om de eigen burgers weg te jagen uit Gaza omdat het internationaal van hen gevraagd werd. Dat wordt vandaag maar al te gemakkelijk vergeten. Hamas heeft nooit water bij de wijn gedaan en heeft verkiezingen gewonnen door een situatie van angst en afhankelijkheid te creëren in de Gazastrook. Hierin gesteund door een barbaarse interpretatie van een zéér diverse godsdienst. Verder gebruikt Hamas kinderen als levend schild en zet het jongeren aan tot zelfdoding. Bijna 8,000 Grad- en Qassam-raketten werden de voorbije maanden op Israël afgevuurd. 800,000 Israëlische burgers leefden in schuilkelders uit angst voor deze raketaanvallen. De reactie van Israël was dan ook gerechtvaardigd. Een defensief in Gaza was gewoon noodzakelijk geworden. En in dit alles is de pers misschien nog een veel grotere vijand voor Israël dan Hamas. De gewezen Israëlische premier Golda Meir zei het al: "Wij kunnen de Palestijnen vergeven dat het kindermoordenaars zijn. Maar wij kunnen het hen niet vergeven dat zij van ons kindermoordenaars maken." En later voegde ze daar nog aan toe: "Er zal pas vrede heersen in het Midden-Oosten als de Palestijnen hun eigen kinderen even hard beginnen te beminnen als ze ons vandaag haten."
Gisteren tekende ik present op een pro-Israëldemonstratie in het Antwerpse Harmoniepark waar Diane Keyser van het "Forum van Joodse Organisaties" de angstsituatie in Sderot en andere Zuid-Israëlische steden kwam duiden. Ook professor Marc Cogen van de Universiteit Gent en VLD-gemeenteraadslid Claude Marinower gaven een speech voor de 500 aanwezigen. Cogen putte uit zijn vakgebied de nodige kennis om onomwonden te zeggen dat Israël het internationaal recht aan zijn kant heeft en Hamas dit conflict "zeker niet mag winnen". Marinower somde de antisemitische incidenten van de laatste dagen in Brussel, Antwerpen en Charleroi op en stond stil bij de mantra van islamosocialisten dat dit conflict niet naar België geïmporteerd mag worden. Marinower maakte duidelijk dat enkel de moslims in België dat willen importeren. Het was hartverwarmend om deze massa pro-Israëlactivisten te zien in de sneeuw in een door de politie hermetisch afgesloten stadspark. En in tegenstelling tot de betogingen van werkloze islamisten en hun spijbelende kroost door de week, vond deze manifestatie op een zondag plaats en waren er geen incidenten. Dat is het verschil tussen eerlijke oprecht bezorgde burgers en halvegare wilden die dezelfde dag in Brussel tientallen containers in brand staken en evenveel auto's kort en klein sloegen.

Morele gronden nog tot daar (als u dat soort overwegingen wilt laten meespelen komt u vroeg of laat - eerder vroeg dan laat - hopeloos in de knoei maar soit) maar juridische ? Sinds wanneer verandert het eigendomsrecht over een stuk grond ook het land waartoe dit stuk grond behoort ? Gaan hele wijken van pakweg Brasschaat of Kapellen binnenkort bij Nederland worden geannexeerd of - oh the horror - mogen de Franstaligen van Vincent dan toch de faciliteitengemeenten bij het Waals en/of Brussels Gewest voegen ? En dan moeten we nog toevoegen dat die Hollanders en die Franstaligen rechtmatig eigenaar zijn en niet door een "wet op de afwezigen" te stemmen eigenaar werden (wat hen volgens het internationaal recht tot niet meer maakt dan een stelletje krakers).

Los van het feit dat u klakkeloos de officiële zionistische propaganda overneemt (het tegendeel zou me verrast hebben) zie ik hier geen valabel argument. Allez vooruit, wie de Kalmthoutse Hei kan omzetten in vruchtbare akkers mag ze houden zie. Is dat het ? Ik ben trouwens al in Israël geweest en ik kan u verzekeren dat de woestijnen nog altijd woestijn zijn, de olijfgaarden nog steeds olijfgaarden en dat men hoogstens hier en daar - middels overdadige irrigatie - wat landbouwgewassen heeft kunnen aanleggen.

We do not accept collectivist rationales like “God’s will”, racial, ethnic or religious superiority, collective historical rights, manifest destiny, colonial prerogative, United Nations sanction or benevolent world hegemony. And we do not defend the sinister machinations of nation states, especially when their claims of “self-defense” are plainly bogus.

American Mandarins

Robert Scheer asks an important question: “Why Do So Few Speak Up for Gaza?” His focus is the lack of Western public outrage against Israeli military actions against Gaza –outrage that should have been apparent in newspapers and television long before the most recent spasm of bloodshed and destruction. When the wrong party won democratic elections in Gaza, democracy supporters in Tel Aviv and Washington responded with an economic embargo, supported by the US-subsidized socialist-dictatorship of Egypt.
That particular act of war was extremely successful in starving and angering the already frustrated Palestinians who live in Gaza on $2 a day, with an unemployment rate of 70%. The lawless yet far less deadly Hamas rocket attacks on Israeli targets in December are claimed to have “started” the latest phase of the Israeli military and political campaign against Gaza. However, one needs only to look at the death toll (one-sided), the difference in military capacities between Israel and Gaza (shocking) and the kind of arsenals employed by both sides to determine what is happening. We’ve seen it on the elementary school playground, but this version is played out with incredible destructive force, no supervision, no brave friends, and no justice.
The history of the policy in Gaza is important, even though average Americans are not experts on this history, and should not have to be. Those we do expect to understand this history apparently do not. Most mainstream pundits are either unfamiliar with the history, deny the facts, or choose to tell only the “winning” side, as AIPAC and the Israeli government would have it told. Thus Robert Scheer’s question.
There are several answers to his question, beyond the obvious import of “The Lobby.”
First, it is not in the least hypocritical for a country like the US to support what Israel is doing in Gaza. Washington TALKS THE TALK OF FREEDOM? BUT RARELY WALKS THE WALK, especially when poor people in poorer countries stand in the way of the federal state’s desires. The US has conducted or overseen much the same type of criminal activity against impoverished and unemployed civilians around the world, and in some cases, at home. Washington has, for decades, destroyed lives and livelihoods of Columbian farmers in the name of the “War on Drugs.” Washington mishandles Mexican immigration and blatantly ignores the impoverished Mexicans in US border towns and elsewhere. Our pseudo-free-market government, with its predictable cycle of Cuban-cigar-smoking presidents, has for nearly 50 years maintained a punishing economic embargo on Cuba, hypocritically delaying that country’s return to freedom and prosperity by decades. Of course, we tend to forget this current history – and consider the primary abuse by the US government today is that of poor Muslim populations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and of the people of Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia through Washington’s financial support of their corrupt but US-compliant governments. Well, there is that.
Secondly, many intellectuals tend to be less talented than they imagine, and they tend to make less money than they think they deserve. Mises points this out in The Anti-Capitalist Mentality, as does Hans-Hermann Hoppe. Hoppe’s concise essay on this topic explains that intellectuals need external economic support, and that this support comes from natural elites, those with wealth, a.k.a. the entrepreneurial, the innovative, the skilled producers, the risk-takers. Hoppe explains the shift in this natural elite in the United States:
Rich men exist today, but more frequently than not they owe their fortunes directly or indirectly to the state. Hence, they are often more dependent on the state’s continued favors than many people of far-lesser wealth. They are typically no longer the heads of long-established leading families, but “nouveaux riches.” Their conduct is not characterized by virtue, wisdom, dignity, or taste, but is a reflection of the same proletarian mass-culture of present-orientation, opportunism, and hedonism that the rich and famous now share with everyone else. Consequently – and thank goodness – their opinions carry no more weight in public opinion than most other people’s.
The twentieth century emergence of the predatory state as a new “natural” elite matters, even if the intellectual elite it subsidizes does not. Should we care about which wealth sector supports the intellectual class? Surely, intellectuals tell the truth, enlighten honestly, let chips fall where they may, regardless of monetary enticements? Isn’t that what it means to be an intellectual? No, Virginia, that’s what it means to be a moral intellectual. What we see in the mainstream today, and in all past episodes of statism throughout history, is the other kind. Many of these articulate and well-read advocates of “truth” are just plain sell-outs. Others are self-promoting, submissive, boot-licking sellouts. Words like mandarin apply, and thanks to Red Pill Radio and Bill Meyers for reminding me of the term.
But American statist mandarins do not wear the orange robes and peculiar headgear, and they do not sit in specially designed chairs. Instead, they pose as thoughtful independents, even when they are associated with this party or that lobby, there is often the essence of inquiring academicity about them. That’s a shame, because not knowing they are mandarins of the state, chartered to support the state or starve, we don’t know that the occasional or even constant lie to their audience is, for them, the lesser of two evils.
Thirdly, there is no outrage over Gaza because there is simply too much money being made. John Perkins has explained in his bestselling books on US economic practices around the world how the US is no different than other corrupt states in using diplomacy, espionage, and economic manipulation to enrich itself in the short term. Wars, particularly your own or those of your closest ally, when your country is the biggest arms exporter of them all, is likewise a good deal. When the most recent assault on Gaza has temporarily depleted Israel’s stockpiled arms and ammunition, much of it manufactured in the US or by heavily US-invested companies, it’s time to celebrate in the weapons supply sector, which goes beyond the well known military-industrial complex to include agricultural chemical companies like Dow Chemical headquartered in Midland, Michigan and United Phosphorus, Inc in Trenton, New Jersey. Immediate and urgent opportunities abound, like this one, to ship 3,000 tons of US ammunition to Israel from a port in Greece.
Few speak up for Gaza because it is small – 1.5 million people on 140 square miles. It has no oil, no water, and very little land, no ability to operate freely and trade with anyone. Gaza isn’t buying high quality weaponry by the shipload, profiting a long supply chain than ends not in a US boardroom, but in the US Congress itself. Gaza meets the Michael Ledeen definition of a “crappy little country” that must sacrifice itself to a more powerful country, and her ideological allies. Unlike Tibet, there is no Hollywood love affair with a people cursed by proximity to military hegemons. Unlike the case of fuzzy orphaned kittens and sad-eyed puppies, prevention of cruelty to Gazans is a hard sell in the United States.
The United States has entangled itself abroad in so many ways, at so many levels and for so long, that the lies of the state, told and explained to us by state mandarins in print and on air, are decomposing on themselves. How they will sell this compost to an increasingly sensitized American people will require all of their talent, and significant state resources to support them. Meanwhile, Gaza smolders and dreams of justice, and revenge.

Uw gegoochel met andermans teksten raakt kant noch wal. Onder libertariërs bestaat er geen consensus over Israël. Het "Ayn Rand Center" publiceerde bijvoorbeeld een uitgebreid artikel ter verdediging van Israël en in het Wikipedia-artikel over libertarisme en interventionisme staat net Israël aangegeven als prototype van verdeeldheid.
De Harvard-studie werd door Luc Van Braekel al op 29 september 2008 aangehaald met link naar de Harvard-website en al. Ik dacht dat dit soort informatie bij het grote publiek bekend was. Quod non dus, wat veel zegt over de anti-Israëlgekleurdheid van onze pers en het paardenkleppendenken van islamistenknuffelaars als het gros van onze landgenoten.

Als het op het zelfbeschikkingsrecht van 'volkeren' aankomt, grijp ik steeds terug naar het 'eigendomsrecht'. Men kan zich pas afscheiden als men eigendom is van het stuk dat men wil afscheiden. Die theorie haalde ik al enkele maanden geleden aan op mijn weblog. De Italiaanse professor Carlo Lottieri is hoofdzakelijk met dat vraagstuk bezig geweest in Italië.
"Carlo Lottieri, de voorzitter van het “Instituto Bruno Leoni” in Turijn en een professor aan de universiteit van Sienna, kon zijn Noord-Italiaanse afkomst niet verdoezelen. Zijn lezing over het recht op afscheiding was meesterlijk. Vol enthousiasme en spontaneïteit maakte hij komaf met alle tegenargumenten en legitimeerde hij het recht op secessie aan de hand van liberale principes zoals het recht op privaat eigendom. Theoretisch hebben alle personen die op legitieme wijze eigendom van grond verkregen hebben het recht om zich af te scheiden. In de praktijk sprak Lottieri wel over een “grote meerderheid” van de eigenaars, in plaats van over “alle”, en stelde hij een vorm van territoriale éénheid voorop, alsook doorgangsrechten wanneer een secessie een ander “land” in twee verdeelt. Israël heeft bestaansrecht omdat het oorspronkelijk gesticht werd op eerlijk gekochte gronden. De Franstaligen in de Brusselse rand mogen zich van Vlaanderen afscheiden, maar de moslims in onze grootsteden niet omdat zij hun eigendomsrechten vaak verkregen hebben via staatssubsidies zoals uitkeringen en bouwtoelagen, en dat overtreedt dus de regel van “legitiem verkregen eigendom”. Ook zijn minder tot de verbeelding sprekende lezingen waren best te smaken, zoals de geschiedkundige schets van staatsvormingen en de “slippery slope” van méér en méér overheidsmacht."
Kortom: Franstaligen in de Rand mogen zich van Vlaanderen afscheiden en doen wat ze willen. Israëlieten mogen een staat stichten op hun eigendom. Islamieten mogen zich niet afscheiden van de steden waar ze wonen tenzij ze hun eigendom rechtmatig verworven hebben. Zonder uitkeringen, gesubsidieerde aankopen of schenkingen van de staat dus! Dat is de libertarische kijk op eigendom, secessie en zelfbeschikking. Ook Hans-Hermann Hoppe verdedigt die redenering trouwens.

Zeer consistente redenering. Wel één bemerking bij dat secessierecht. In de praktijk is de theorie toch niet toepasbaar. Men kan nooit aantonen dat men rechtmatig in het bezit van een stuk land is omdat men nooit tot den beginne kan terugkijken. Elk eigendomsrecht bewust historisch toch ooit op een onrechtmatige daad (roof, annexatie, nationalisering, diefstal, moord, plundering, ...). En ook meer praktische bezwaren. Als elke landeigenaar zich afscheidt is er geen probleem, maar wat als enkelen dat doen zonder territoriale éénheid en zo de anderen van elkaar afsluiten of anderen de toegang ontnemen.

Israel has a veneer of Westernness about it, yet no one in their right mind would call it Western. Any more than they would call modern Brazil Western.
Een ander issue wat belangrijk is maar weinig ter sprake komt (toch buiten Israël lijkt me) is de bezorgdheid over de "demografische tijdbom" die in Israël tikt.
Helaas is elke staat in het Midden-Oosten een dictatuur, behalve één dan, en dat is Israël, toevallig een staat die grotendeels wordt bevolkt door immigranten uit een Westerse cultuur.
Al ben ik bijzonder gelukkig om te kunnen zeggen dat ook Turkije en Dubai het niet zo slecht doen.
Nochtans is het dan niet zo wereldvreemd om te denken dat hoe meer niet-Westerlingen Israël bevolken, hoe meer Israël op zijn buurlanden zal gaan lijken.

Israël, toevallig een staat die grotendeels wordt bevolkt door immigranten uit een Westerse cultuur.
Ook weer fout. Is er hier eigenlijk iemand die zich de moeite getroost om iets op te zoeken alvorens het hier als wijsheid te poneren ? De meerderheid van de Israëlische joden stamt af van Mizrahim and Sephardim. Grote groepen joden kwamen bijvoorbeeld uit Marokko en Jemen. Hallelujah.
@Steven: van de Joden uit de Arabische landen weet ik dat ze sociaal achtergesteld zijn in Israël, en dan gaat het dus om de Joden uit Marokko en Jemen.
Misschien niet accuraat verwoord, maar wat hierdoor duidelijk wordt is dat het succes van Israël gebouwd is op Westerse Joden.
De rol van cultuur valt in zo'n situatie toch niet weg te denken. Als liberalen/libertariërs moeten we inzien dat er wel een reden is waarom Israël zo welvarend is en de Arabische landen niet.

Ik weet dat u de gewoonte hebt u zorgvuldig uit te drukken en ik erger mij dan ook zelden of nooit aan uw artikels. En inderdaad de Sefardim zijn in de praktijk tweederangsburgers onder de joodse bevolking van Israël. Dit leidde tot de oprichting van o.a. de Shas-partij, een zeer interessante partij trouwens. In Israël merk je heel duidelijk de kloof tussen de welstellende, invloedrijke Ashkenazim en de (over het algemeen) verpauperde Sefardische bevolking.

De joodse kolonies op de Westbank en in Oost-Jeruzalem zijn inderdaad nooit erkend maar ik raad u aan daar eens een kijkje te gaan nemen... Een groot deel van die kolonies zullen nooit worden verlaten aangezien daar massaal geïnvesteerd is door Israëli's. Het is simpelweg ondenkbaar dat deze zullen worden opgegeven. Men kan dergelijke politiek van voldongen feiten verafschuwen maar tegenhouden is iets anders. Zelfs 'religieuze symbolen' zoals Hebron (enkele honderden joodse kolonisten temidden van tienduizenden moslims) zal men nooit of slechts onder grote internationale druk teruggeven.
@Steven: Bij mijn weten is Oost-Jerusalem in '67 veroverd geweest, behoort het nu toe tot de Israëlische Staat en werd het nooit overgedragen aan de Palestijnse Autoriteit.
Wat betreft de kolonies op de Westelijke Jordaanoever. Israël zal die wellicht moeten evacueren (zoals Gaza 2005) of tot een overeenkomst komen met de Palestijnse Autoriteit.

This Is Our Ally ?
The more of ARI’s published work one reads the more it becomes clear that any review of ARI must address Israel at length.
About a year after 9-11, two flags, side by side, appeared on the first page of ARI’s website. The flag to the left was the American flag. Printed across it: AMERICA AT WAR. The flag to the right, exactly the same size, was the Israeli flag. Printed across it: IN MORAL DEFENSE OF ISRAEL. [1]
Each flag was a link to a list of ARI media op-eds. Here were some of the titles:

Which article went under which flag hardly matters. As the titles suggest, these articles claim that America and Israel share the same values and the same fate. It will become clear below that ARI thinks of Israel as if it were their own country, as if it were an extension of America.
ARI’s support for Israel goes beyond the moral. They support – or rather want us all to support – Israel financially as well. They do not view your aid to Israel as charity or sacrifice, but rather want you to believe that aiding Israel helps defend America from Osama bin Laden.
They don’t bother with asking your permission before taking your money. During an interview broadcast on the American C-Span television network in 2002, Leonard Peikoff said that if you don’t like your taxes going to Israel, leave the country.
Currently around five billion dollars in U.S. taxes go directly to Israel each year. Since 1948 Americans have been forced to give Israel, at minimum estimate, over four times the amount it took to put man on the moon. [2] The British also helped Israel at first. Yet according to ARI fellow Edwin Locke, in his essay “The Palestinian Choice” (April 10, 2002), the Israelis did it all:
“... when the Jews came to Palestine, it was a desert. People were living in the same primitive manner as they had been since the time of Moses. The Jews ... turned an almost barren land into a modern, industrial civilization. They raised cities where there had been only dirt; they developed irrigated farms where there had been only dry sand; they built cars and trucks and planes where there had been mainly pack animals. They produced wealth where there had been only poverty.”
Calling pre-Israel Palestine “a desert” – no villages or farms, only nomads – and “almost barren” – no life worth speaking of – opposes historical fact, [3] but set that aside. At least 100 billion dollars expropriated from Americans and spent on an area smaller than New Jersey will do a lot of turning and raising and building. Mr. Locke totally ignores the productive people saddled with this burden. He has eyes only for Israelis, and he cannot say thank you.
Mr. Peikoff’s televised statement to America that you can leave the country if you don’t like it was in response to a caller who had asked about the apparent contradiction between the virtue of acting in one’s self-interest versus being forced to help Israel, which, the caller maintained, isn’t worthy of help in any case. Here is Mr. Peikoff’s reply, in full: [4]
It’s the function of the government according to Objectivism to defend the citizens of the country. And once someone is elected it’s up to his discretion what allies to defend and what not. You can’t write that off as coercion when you join the society. When you voluntarily live in it you are agreeing that your life has to be defended against foreign aggressors. That is up to the discretion of the Commander in Chief and the Congress.
In this case we should certainly support Israel in every way, moral, economic and military. Every way because that is our only ally in the entire Mideast, our best ally. They have many mistaken things in their society, some of which you named. Israel is not in any sense perfect, but it is perfect compared to the rest of the people in the Mideast. That’s our only hope of together, between the United States and Israel, subduing the threat of terrorists. This is a simple example of the government going to an ally to help us put down a gunman. And if you say your taxes are extorted because you disapprove, then don’t expect defense from the government and don’t live in this country.
At the end Mr. Peikoff spoke with raised voice and increased righteousness.
True, defending us from foreign aggression is a legitimate purpose of our government, and if you don’t like it you can always choose to live elsewhere. And true, if aiding Israel were necessary to defend America then such aid would be legitimate. But the question of the perfection of Israel is a strawman set up solely by Mr. Peikoff. No one demands perfection of Israel. We can however demand goodwill and decency.
Setting aside the internal nature of Israel, the crux of Mr. Peikoff’s argument, its major premise, the assertion on which it all depends, is that aiding Israel helps defend America, that Israel is our ally.
Naturally ARI shares Mr. Peikoff’s position. ARI claims that (1) Israel is a bastion of freedom and Western values, and (2) Israel is America’s ally. We focus on the second claim here. Consider the following quotes from ARI’s publications – the first one is the oldest, written right after 9-11, followed by a random selection:
“It is being said that this crisis will show us who our friends are. But we need no crisis to know who our best friend is, and always has been, in the Middle East. Our best friend is Israel, and we should begin by vowing to support that friend as loyally as she has supported us.”

Obviously Israel – and its enemies – loom large at ARI. Is Israel really America’s ally as they claim? In this article we do not otherwise inquire into the nature of Israel’s government, or ask why we would need an ally in the Middle East in the first place. We ask only: Is Israel our ally?
Well, does Israel act like our ally? Does it act like a friend and supporter ought to act? To help answer that question the following articles review some episodes in the history of Israel which ARI either ignores or distorts. Though the Lavon affair may seem like ancient history, you will find that it is as relevant as yesterday’s headlines. Titles in curly-brackets, though researched, have yet to be posted:

For further examples of Israel’s treachery see the references below. [6] It will be abundantly clear to the sincere reader that Israel is no ally of America. Not only a liability, it is an outright enemy.
After reading the above articles, read again what ARI has to say about Israel. It becomes absurd. The people at ARI must know – they have made it their business to know – the nature and history of Israel, yet they evade that knowledge, while trying to keep their readers as ignorant as they pretend to be. In this they are much like Walter Duranty, the New York Times reporter who wrote glowing dispatches from Soviet Russia in the 1930s.
We have focused on the negative, the harm Israel inflicts on America. Is there a positive that somehow makes up for it? What benefit has Israel ever been to America that, in spite of all the above, makes it our ally?
ARI claims that Israel helps America because Israel is a bastion of freedom and Western values which America can look up to and emulate — believe it or not — instead of (I would say) dragging us down to Israel’s level. We address ARI’s claim on a future page. [7] Here we simply wonder how a bastion of freedom and Western values could treat America the way Israel does.
ARI says that Israel helps defend us from terrorists. In other words, a tiny bankrupt country 5,700 miles away helps defend the mighty United States that props it up – a ridiculous proposition. The truth is the exact opposite. Besides financial support, the U.S. provides much of Israel’s war materiel, making the U.S. Israel’s enabler in every bomb it drops. [8] We must expect that the U.S.-Israeli partnership, justified or not, eventually results in Israel’s neighbors hating the U.S. and wanting retaliation against Americans. [9]
“Israel’s enemies are America’s enemies” (quoting ARI) not because they were our enemies, or “because we are free,” as ARI claims, but because our government’s meddling in the Middle East has made them our enemies. Besides supporting Israel this meddling includes the off-again-on-again arming, training, and financing of Middle Eastern thugs of every stripe: the Shah of Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (Iran, ironically via Israel), the Emir of Kuwait, Saddam Hussein (Iraq), Pervez Musharraf (Pakistan), Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden (via Pakistan), Islam Karimov (Uzbekistan), etc.
ARI claims that Israel defends America from the Palestine Liberation Organization, as if the PLO had ever attacked us on our soil, had the means to do so, or had a reason to attack the U.S. aside from its support of Israel.
ARI maintains that Israel is a buffer between the U.S. and “our common enemies,” that Israel even acts as a decoy drawing the fire that otherwise would be directed at us. Says ARI: [10] “If they succeed in destroying Israel, they will turn their full attention to the United States.” In other words, without Israel we would be even worse off !
On the benefit side the ledger is blank, Israel has done absolutely nothing for America.
In sum, aid to Israel does not help defend America, it endangers America – and for no good reason. We get hit twice, first from Israel and then from Israel’s enemies.
Expect to be smeared if you criticize Israel in any way. Jack Wakeland, writing in the TIA Daily feature article of April 7, 2005, refers to “the tired old opposition to Israel.” Some people may oppose Israel for bad reasons, but that does not make the good reasons go away, nor does the age of such reasons undermine their truth. [11]
ARI’s supporters never address Israel’s actual behavior. Instead they say, in robot fashion, that any criticism of Israel is “hating the good for being the good.” As we have seen in the articles above the Israelis are nimble liars. (A phrase once applied to the Soviets comes to mind: “masters of deceit.”) When Israel aims its lies at America it is bad for America. If justice consists in loving and hating aright – as Aristotle put it – then we should hate the bad for being the bad.
Back to that pair of flags, American and Israeli, side by side on the main page of ARI’s website. After resting there a year or so, an insult to the American flag, they moved to the website’s new Media Links page, where they remained for about another year, one above the other this time, then they disappeared when the website was redesigned (the underlying articles were rearranged elsewhere). I don’t know why the flags were removed, but they hinted at the true feelings of the people at ARI. We began by observing that Israel and America seemed equally important to them, but that would be an improvement over their actual estimation. All the while spouting patriotic bromides, ARI’s true, if unadmitted, motive for entangling America in the Middle East is: Israel First.

Our criticism of Israel is directed at its government and those of its citizens who support its crimes. Not all Israelis do, and in this respect they are like many Americans and their government.
The Internet can be a useful research tool but beware of pitfalls. You will find websites whitewashing Israel’s mendacity with brazen lies. This is especially true of the USS Liberty incident and the Pollard affair. On the other hand you will find sites criticizing Israel which, though in part they agree with reputable sources, are irrational. You must remind yourself that if an embezzler utters 2 + 2 = 4 it doesn’t make it any the less true.

A cluster bomb explodes above the ground and releases several hundred smaller “bomblets,” which spread over an area the size of several football fields. Het Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) werd na het overlijden van Ayn Rand door Peikoff opgericht - tegen haar eigen principes in, want ze moest helemaal niets hebben van een of ander 'school' om haar ideeën te verspreiden.
Als een soort éminence grise voert Peikoff er het bewind in samenwerking met de oorlogszuchtige Israëliër Yaron Brook, een gewezen legerofficier in Israël. Het is onder invloed van Brook dat het pro-Israël standpunt van de Objectivisten tot bloeddorstige hoogte,of beter gezegd, dieptepunt werd gebracht.

Die cartoon is inhoudelijk sowieso verkeerd. Israëlische soldaten hebben jarenlang de Palestijnen als menselijk schild gebruikt tijdens hun operaties. Het hooggerechtshof van Israël heeft pas in 2005 hiertegen een verbod opgelegd vanwege het overtreden van de internationale wet van de VN. En... nu komt het beste stuk: een verbod waartegen Israël's Ministerie van Defensie notabene in beroep is gegaan!

Ja ja, die Israelieten verwijten hun tegenstanders van verwerpelijke praktijken die ze zélf zonder enige schroom hebben toegepast/toepassen. Zij hebben dan nog een ultra-modern leger, Hamas-militanten niet. Dit laatste natuurlijk in de veronderstelling dat Hamas dit ook doet.
Uw ego is groter dan uw verstand.
Over het "ego" van de anonieme kan men moeilijk oordelen, maar over zijn verstand kan men dat heel gemakkelijk doen.
-- Wanneer Israelische soldaten op palestijnse terroristen schieten, en er zouden 'onschuldige' burger slachtoffers vallen als 'collateral damage', dan denkt de anonieme blijkbaar dat die burgers er waren om de Israelische soldaten te beschermen als vermeend "schild". Wat zou dat zeggen over zijn verstand? Of zegt het meer over zijn oneerlijk 'karakter'?
-- En wanneer de Israeli democratie, die effectieve scheiding van de 3 Machten kent, dat dan ook nog demonstreert via een 'intermediaire' juridische uitspraak en een 'beroep' erop, dan denkt de anoniemeling dat te kunnen gebruiken als een verwijt tegen die democratie. Wat zegt dat over zijn begrip van 'democratie'?
-- Over zijn infantieele visie op "internationaal recht" ga ik niet beginnen. Want dat is te complex voor iemand met zijn verstand. Maar hij heeft wel het excuus dat die visie tegenwoordig ruim wordt gedeeld door de naief-linkse media.
